Encore Programs

Senior Services

For the past thirty+ years, Encore has remained true to its strong commitment to its mission: To assist elderly people with their daily needs, in an effort to improve their quality of life and to help them live with dignity and independence in their own community.

ENCORE SENIOR CENTER

Visitors to the Senior Center will find a bustling, thriving and fully handicapped-accessible community facility based in the heart of New York City’s “Crossroads of the World.” More than 200+ seniors come to the Center each day to participate in the varied programs and services that are offered. The Center is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Seniors 60 years of age or older can receive any of the services offered through the Center.

The Senior Center is “the” place to visit for seniors who like to choose from a variety of interesting activities. It offers a host of weekly programs and activities to enhance and enrich a senior’s life. Seniors can choose from Yoga, T’ai Chi Chih, computer classes, painting classes, movies, trips, birthday celebrations, bingo, concerts, holiday parties and more!

Lectures and discussion groups on various subjects such as crime prevention, nutrition, legal rights, fire safety and estate planning are also offered.

Seniors who walk through the doors of Encore regard Encore Senior Center as a second home and Encore’s staff and fellow members as “family.” As members of this family, seniors are treated with dignity and respect by all who serve them and by those who participate in Encore’s programs. Seniors know they are respected, regardless of race, creed, color, national origin, age, gender, disability, marital status, sexual orientation, lineage or citizenship.

Encore encourages all senior members to participate in a broad range of regularly scheduled programs, activities and services provided at the Center. Members will not be pressured to participate unless they wish to do so.

SENIOR CENTER HOURS

Encore doors are officially open from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM, Mon. to Fri. All activities are listed on the Monthly Newsletter which is provided to seniors onsite and posted on Encore’s web site.

Creating
Miracles Every Day

“Every human being has a great yet often unknown gift to care, to be compassionate, to become present to the other, to listen, to hear and to receive. If that gift would be set free and made available, miracles could take place.”

—Henri M. Nouwen

This quotation serves as inspiration for the varied programs and services available through Encore Community Services. Encore strives to “create miracles” in all sizes, shapes and variety for the seniors who participate in programs and services, and also for the homebound. We invite you to help Encore continue to create miracles! Perhaps the seniors themselves can best sum up some of these miracles, in their own words:

“I regained my dignity at Encore 49…before Encore, home was a cardboard box.”

“It’s important for home bound seniors to know someone is there for them…if I get ‘down’ I call my friendly visitor; she always cheers me up.”

“I love all the activities at the Center. I’ve made some good friends here. If I didn’t come here I’d never get any exercise, or such good food.”

“I can forget my aches and pains when I get to the Center. I feel like the staff cares about me.”

“When I miss a lunch one day someone always asks the next day ‘you OK?’ That makes me very happy.”

“I know what it’s like to be homeless. I was out there living on the streets. After 7 years, I was tired of being cold, wet, hungry…it finally got to me.…I think Encore saved my life.”

“Being old, alone and in poor health, I don’t get out so much. I appreciate my meal every day. I don’t know how I would survive without it.”

“Without my escort, I would never be able to go to the doctor.”

“When I moved to Encore West with my best friend ‘Fluffy’, I was overjoyed. I came from an SRO and some people were abusive to me and Fluffy. They had no heart. I will never leave Encore West!”

“There are two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.”

—Albert Einstein
